The New Zealand Ayurvedic Association Inc., was formed in 2003 to support Ayurveda and Yoga students, schools, suppliers, practitioners and enthusiasts. The emphasis was a democratic structure that gave equal voice to all members, and that recognised training from all backgrounds. The association has since been involved in raising awareness about educational standards that suit the New Zealand and international environment.

Activities

  • As an affiliate signatory of the NZ Charter of Health Practitioners, we have been working with the Charter to further the interests of natural health practitioners. We were instumental in raising awareness of Yoga as a therapeutic modality, thus creating the Yoga Therapist category within the Charter.
  • As a new affiliate of the Natural Health Council, we will be working closely with the Council to establish standards of education and practice, which will encourage acceptance within the proposed Integrated Medicine model of national health.
  • With the Natural Health Council we are also offering highly discounted rates for Professional Indemnity insurance.
  • We have published The Science of Life magazine, which has been freely distributed to the public, as well as medical and complementary health practitioners, and policymakers in the government.
  • We are getting involved in health fairs around the country and overseas, to promote Ayurveda and Yoga, and promote our members.
  • We are liaising with other associations in NZ and abroad, fostering links and creating a stronger, more credible voice in society and government.
  • We have created an Internet mailing list for members to network and express their views.
  • We are always seeking ways to support students and help them get established in their professions.
  • We promote members' products and services through members' discounts.

Future plans

  • Talks on Ayurveda and Yoga for the public, and ongoing training for practitioners.
  • Establishing further contacts with the media, and promoting Ayurveda and Yoga through articles, features and other means.
  • Creating internationally-recognised standards of education and practice.
  • Participation at fairs, expos and other events to promote ayurveda and yoga to the public.
